JEEP TEAM TAKES GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE MEDALS AT OCR WARRIOR #7

October 24, 2017

This past weekend saw Jeep Team OCR Athletes, Thomas van Tonder and Jay Jay Deysel, take on the penultimate race of the Toyota Warrior Series, powered by Reebok, at Meerendal Wine Estate in the Western Cape, and bring home Gold, Silver and Bronze medals between them.

Over the weekend, the Warrior #7 attracted just over 1900 competitors, all eager to tackle the world-class obstacles, putting their body, mind and spirit to test.

Van Tonder, following his top 30 individual performance and top 10 team performance at Spartan World Team Championships two weeks ago, and his outstanding top 10 individual result at the OCR World Championships in Canada last weekend, started his campaign on Saturday with the Reebok Individual Sprint race.

The short, fast and high-intensity race produced two podium finishes for Jeep Team – Van Tonder took silver while his teammate, Jay Jay Deysel, took bronze. First place went to Trevor Lagerway.

Sunday saw van Tonder and Deysel take on the Black Ops Elite – the toughest race of the weekend – a 15km trail with 30 world-comparing obstacles designed to challenge strength, endurance and agility.

Back on home soil, feeling fit and nicely warmed up from the previous day’s sprint, Van Tonder took Gold in time of 01:32:35. Just over 30 second behind van Tonder was the ever-improving, Hlelani Radebe, and rounding off the podium in third was Greg Avierinos in a time of 01:33:21.

Big up to Van Tonder because Avierinos is no slacker either; he is in fantastic form after winning Silver at OCR World Champs last weekend in Canada racing his age group M18-24 in the 15km/47 obstacles.

Fellow Jeep Team athlete, Jay Jay Deysel, crossed the line in 6th place with a time of 01:40:10.

“What an epic weekend of racing. I always have to dig deep for the Warrior events, so I’m super stoked and blessed to take home 2nd in the Reebok Sprint Race and 1st place in the Black Ops Elite,” says van Tonder.

In the women’s race Dominique D’Oliveira was on fire and put on a powerful performance to get Gold in a time of 02:09:57, a huge 44 minutes ahead of Michelle Merand in second, and Carina Marx in third with a time of 03:35:10.

The final race in the Warrior Series is Warrior #8 on the 25-26 November at Riversands Farm, just outside of Fourways in Gauteng.
